Nasheed should respect report, despite Saeed

The government has said that former President Mohamed Nasheed should respect the report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), despite the resignation of his representative to the CNI, Gaha Ahmed Saeed.
Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza said today that Nasheed had agreed with Commonwealth in June, that the report of the CNI must be accepted regardless of the result of its investigation.
He said that an agreement, which also states that the report should not be obstructed in any way, was signed by Nasheed and the government, with the Commonwealth.
Abbas said that Saeed’s resignation does not affect the validity of the Commission.
“Nasheed had agreed much earlier, that the CNI and its report are valid,” Abbas said.
Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) International Spokesperson Hamid Abdul Gafoor said in an interview to Minivan Radio that the reasons behind Saeed’s resignation raises questions in relation to the CNI’s validity, and that these factors should be reviewed by the Commonwealth.
“The report includes the work of the CNI prior to its reform; the MNDF video footages are not fully available; the foreign Judge was away for more than 30 days; information was not obtained from some Generals – all these factors raise questions about the validity of the CNI. One could conclude that the Commission has completely failed,” he said.
The CNI is scheduled to present its report at 10:00 tomorrow morning at a ceremony at the President’s Office. Saeed resigned from CNI at around 19:00 today.
Nasheed said this afternoon that it has been confirmed that the CNI will not state that the government was changed through a coup, and that he will lead a protest tonight to topple the government.
