Male’ City Council has signed a memorandum of understanding with Dutch Docklands International regarding the floating city project.
The floating city is a community island that will be constructed in a lagoon close to Maldives capital Male’ City, accessible via a speedboat transfer. The city will be developed using the latest floating technology originating from the Netherlands.
The project involves development of 5,000 housing units on the island that will be tethered to the lagoon floor and linked together to ensure safety.
On Thursday, 31 March, the MoU was signed by Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on behalf of the government and the CEO of Dutch Docklands Mr. Paul H.T.M van de Camp.
“Finding adequate housing is one of the biggest challenges for the Maldives,” Dr. Muizzu said during the ceremony, who added that the government of Maldives was delighted to collaborate with an internationally esteemed developer on the project.
“It gives us great joy that the Male’ City Council is willing to support us in this pioneering project for the Maldives and the world. Through this project, we are not only addressing urgent housing issues, but also demonstrating an adaptation approach to rising sea levels due to climate change,” Mr. van de Camp commented.
