Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate, former president Mohamed Nasheed has said a faction exists within the Maldives Police Force that is explicitly disobedient, who must be disciplined.
Speaking at a campaign event in Alimas Carnival last night, the former president said; “Abdulla Riyaz said he will make the Maldives police an institution for Maldivians to fear. No. We will not be afraid. We will not step back. We have to clamp down on them. Every effort must be made to this end.”
Nasheed said that Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz must be prosecuted and that the Prosecutor General must resign if he cannot prosecute the police commissioner.
He continued; “The most important tool for development is the elections. The right to vote. Maldives cannot be developed without the approval and consent of the people,” Nasheed said.
He has put a lot of effort to push for the election, Nasheed said, and accused his rival candidates of obstructing the election.
“Our rivals are obstructing the election because they have never before stood for election. They don’t wish to face the vote. They don’t want to obey democratic principles,” Nasheed said.
He also accused former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom of manipulating President Waheed and the Supreme Court bench to obstruct the election. He called on former president Gayoom to step aside and allow the election to proceed.
