President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday called on Maldivians to place national interests above personal concerns, asserting that collective effort is essential to securing long-term prosperity. His remarks were delivered at the inauguration of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport, an event deliberately timed to coincide with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day.
Addressing the ceremony, President Muizzu highlighted the Maldives’ common language, religion, and history as a basis for national unity. He urged citizens to set aside individual biases and personal agendas in pursuit of a shared national purpose.
“Today, we must all resolve that the Maldivian nation should be prioritised above any individual's personal affairs. Furthermore, everyone should commit to advancing together, hand in hand,” the president said. He described the newly inaugurated terminal as a “symbol of success achieved through working together,” highlighting the importance of solidarity in achieving national development.
The president’s remarks also underscored the strategic significance of the terminal’s opening on Independence Day. He drew a direct link between infrastructure and sovereignty, arguing that economic self-reliance is critical to preserving national autonomy. The airport, he said, represents the “most important pillar of economic independence.” President Muizzu also expressed confidence that the project would strengthen the tourism sector and contribute meaningfully to the country’s broader economic advancement.
“To advance this nation, and to secure its prosperity and benefit, we must speak with a singular purpose. We must articulate a unified message, with one voice, in a harmonious rhythm and tone,” he said. “Only then, God willing, can we accomplish the utmost good for this nation. Only then can we ensure this nation reaches future generations in a state of prosperity and well-being. This is a responsibility resting on the shoulders of each and every one of us. Indeed, it is the duty of every individual. And it is a truth from which none of us can evade.”
The terminal’s completion, President Muizzu noted, marked the culmination of a decade-long effort. He extended his appreciation to all individuals and organisations involved in the project, recognising their dedication and perseverance. Among those credited were former presidents Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, whom he named for their respective roles in advancing the initiative.
Support for the project also came from abroad. Muizzu expressed gratitude to four international development funds, the Saudi Fund for Development, the OPEC Fund for International Development, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, for providing substantial financial assistance beyond the government’s budget. He acknowledged the countries behind these institutions for their partnership and support.
Closing his address, the president returned to the theme of unity. He reiterated that the terminal’s success was the result of collective endeavour rather than individual achievement, describing the inauguration as a “historical success” and a testament to what can be accomplished when the nation moves forward together.
