President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reiterated his commitment to the digitalization of the services of all state institutions on Thursday, a move that he said will help eliminate corruption and improve transparency.
In his annual address at the Parliament on Thursday morning, President Muizzu said that the growth of information and communications technology is a key focus area for his administration.
He said that his administration aims to boost the role of ICT in the GDP to 15 percent by 2030, and ensure the Maldivian people enjoy benefits from a digital economy.
Promising “revolutionary changes” to the Maldivian ICT sector, President Muizzu said that the cabinet made key decisions on that front during its meeting last week.
“This includes improving the government’s technology governance, introducing a national digital identity, establishing a data sharing platform, improving cyber security, and more,” he said.
He described his visit to Estonia in January as a trip he made to “pave the path for these efforts.”
President Muizzu said that while the Maldives has introduced eFaas as a digital ID, it needs to improvement to meet international standards and best practice.
“We need to develop an open data sharing platform, and shape the system to streamline all services of the state through applications to provide services through a digital identity. I want to bring these modern and transformative changes of the 21st century to the Maldives,” he said.
President Muizzu said these changes will help eliminate corruption and improve the governments transparency.
He said he hopes to implement the changes within four years.
