The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has indefinitely postponed its planned “Lootuvaifi, Lootuvaifi” rally, which was scheduled for November 17, marking the two-year anniversary of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.
The decision was made unanimously at the party’s National Assembly meeting held in Male' on Saturday evening, according to MDP Deputy Chair Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey).
Iburey stated that the government had denied permission to hold rallies at key public venues including Artificial Beach, Alimas Carnival, and Usfasgandu. He also alleged that the Transport Ministry had issued police orders to block promotional efforts, such as advertising the rally via pickup trucks.
Iburey further claimed that the obstruction was part of a coordinated effort led by Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusaan, aimed at suppressing the party’s public mobilization.
The MDP had previously announced that the November 17 rally would be larger than the October 3 protest, which drew thousands to the streets and resulted in multiple arrests. That rally was part of a broader campaign demanding government accountability.

The party’s five key demands from the October 3 rally included:
Withdrawal of the constitutional amendment affecting MP dismissal procedures
State payments to private companies within five weeks
Reversal of amendments to the Decentralization Act limiting council powers
Repeal of the Media Control Act
Access to Aasandha insurance and medication
MDP had warned that failure to meet these demands would prompt further protests on November 17. While the rally is now postponed, the party says the date, location, and format of future demonstrations will be decided by its leadership.
The October 3 protest saw eight arrests, with six members held in custody for 15 days. All have since been released.
