The national campaign "Healthy Life, Happy Society" has been launched with the aim of creating an empowered society in all islands that promote public health.
The campaign was launched by First Lady Sajida Mohamed at a ceremony held in Guraidhoo, Kaafu Atoll, which was also attended by Minister of Health Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Nazim highlighted that the government is taking proactive steps to prevent diseases before people fall ill. He said that shaping a healthy society is the top priority of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s health policy. He said the government wants to ensure that, under the President’s guidance, every step is taken to protect society from illness. He commended the President’s determination and wisdom as the country’s top leader for setting a good example. He also emphasised that legal measures and community participation will be integral to the campaign’s success.
The campaign is part of a public health promotion effort, aiming to raise awareness to protect citizens from diseases that are becoming prevalent in the Maldives due to diet and lifestyle patterns. The campaign is set to roll out sustainable public health activities across all islands of the Maldives, targeting children, young people, women, and the elderly to promote and encourage healthy living.
The campaign is being conducted in collaboration with various agencies that play a key role in public health planning and implementation at the island level, including:
- Ministry of Health
- Island health centres / hospitals
- Education sector, Schools/Colleges/Universities
- Island Councils
- Women's Development Committees
- Private associations
- Government and private institutions
- Youth Focal Points
The Ministry of Health said the campaign will be regularly monitored and evaluated, with arrangements established for reporting on activities.
To recognise and encourage outstanding contributions, three awards have been introduced under the campaign. These are the Rashu Award, School Award, and Jamiyyaa Award. The awards are given annually to those who achieve the best results based on a set of criteria.
Minister Nazim stressed that the campaign will be conducted rapidly and participatorily, guided by the President, to ensure maximum community involvement. He said the Maldives has set an example in taking comprehensive measures to protect the population from diseases, and added that the campaign demonstrates the government’s commitment to building a healthy and empowered society.
