Foreign Ministry stresses sovereignty and national interest in foreign policy

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed the Maldives government’s commitment to pursuing an independent, responsible and “Maldives First” foreign policy focused on protecting national sovereignty and advancing national interests.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry said the country’s foreign policy is guided by the protection of human rights, upholding national and international law, and constructive engagement with bilateral and multilateral partners.
The ministry stated that, as a sovereign and independent state, the Maldives conducts its foreign relations in line with established institutional processes, guided by national interest, and respect.
It added that the Maldives attaches high importance to maintaining cordial ties with all countries, particularly its longstanding development partners, based on mutual respect and interest. The government also remains committed to strengthening cooperation with like-minded countries and organisations on issues of mutual interest including regional peace, maritime security, sustainable development and international stability, in a balanced and constructive manner.
The statement further noted that public comments on foreign policy, regional security, and international partnerships, particularly by individuals who previously held senior public office, can have significant implications for the country. The ministry stressed that such remarks should contribute to informed dialogue, national unity and confidence in state institutions, adding that utmost care and judgement are important when speaking on matters related to national interests and external relations.
The Foreign Ministry reiterated that the government remains committed to strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations while advancing a foreign policy that reflects the sovereignty, dignity and long-term interests of the Maldivian people.
