With new bins installed, FDC reiterates ban on bulky waste

Dustbins have been placed in FDC‑managed flats in Hulhumale' while residents continue to dump large waste items despite the prohibition.
Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) has installed dustbins in flats in Hulhumalé.
On Wednesday, FDC placed dustbins in 32 towers for the disposal of ordinary household waste.
The corporation said bottles, cardboard boxes and any other type of garbage that does not fall under household waste are prohibited from being dumped in these bins.
FDC advised all stakeholders to strictly follow waste‑disposal rules to maintain the cleanliness of the buildings and the living environment.
Garbage dumping has become a common problem in Hulhumale' and other parts of the city. Especially during Ramadan, it is common to see waste left on roadsides after house‑cleaning.
Two people have recently been fined a total of MVR 8,000 for dumping garbage in the areas surrounding FDC towers in Phase II.
FDC Managing Director Hamdhaan Shakeel told Sun that the fines were issued after the corporation received evidence showing the two individuals dumping waste near the towers. One was fined MVR 5,000 and the other MVR 3,000, he said.
Hamdhaan noted that FDC staff have observed some flat owners taking photos of garbage and posting them in community groups.
He said some people discard empty boxes and then fill them with garbage, causing foul smells. On Monday night alone, 17 garbage trucks, each with a 25‑ton capacity, were emptied from FDC flats, he added.
