Nasheed pledges 12,000 flats for Male

Speaking during the opposition party's new door to door campaign Nasheed said in light of the 10,000 flats constructed within three years after it came into power in 2008, there was no reason to doubt that 12,000 more flats cannot be constructed in five years. He added that MDP’s campaign has brought the plight of the people of Male to his attention and said "lots of families with seven children live in just a one room flat." "The congestion in Male is not something we really want to talk about anymore. It is something that needs definitive action. To construct 12,000 flats for the people of Male is something the government can achieve. Given the financial and economic system in Maldives, it is something that can be easily done. I believe that it is something that must be done," Nasheed said. He also underlined the employment difficulties faced by the people. In that regard, he vowed to set a minimum wage of MVR4,500 when MDP reclaims power and insisted that a monthly salary of MVR5,000 is necessary to sustain a living in the capital. Nasheed further said the international community has accused Maldives of treating expatriate workers as slaves and said a MDP government would streamline the employment market to international standards.
