The Police have arrested an official of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) for the murder of Dr Afrasheem Ali.
Sun Online understands, as confirmed by a lawyer involved in the case, that the MNDF official was arrested earlier this week.
MNDF Spokesperson Colonel Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef said today that an MNDF Corporal was arrested earlier this week by the Police in relation to an ongoing investigation. He said that the official who was arrested had been on pay leave since May this year, following his request to go abroad for studies.
Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef said that the Police can arrest anyone necessary for their investigations, and that MNDF will fully cooperate with the Police on this matter. He, however, did not mention why the Police arrested the official.
“We will fully cooperate with the Police investigation. However we will not get involved in the investigation in any way,” he said.
The Police also arrested Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Reeko Moosa Manik’s son-in-law, Abdullah Javid in relation to Dr Afrasheem’s murder.
At a press conference held last Tuesday, Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz said that two people were directly involved in the murder. They have been identified as Kuda Henveiru Group’s Hussain Humam Ahmed of H. Lobby and Ali Shaan of H. Hicoast.
Riyaz said that an 18-year-old minor was also involved in the murder, and since sufficient evidence has been collected against Humam and Shaan, cases against them will be forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office this week.
