Gov’t Vows to Protect, Facilitate Growth for Small Businesses

The government will initiate the legal framework required to protect and ensure the growth of small businesses in the country this year, the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed announced Sunday.
The Minister made these remarks at the launch of the “Dhiveheenge Ufehdhuntherikamuge Mauraz”, Maldives Expo 2025.
As envisioned by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, this nationwide event, scheduled to run from 23-31 May is aimed at boosting the country's productivity and fostering economic growth.
Speaking during the ceremony, Minister Saeed said the exhibition will showcase the innovations of international businesses and investors as well as developed countries in order to facilitate and inspire the development of new ideas by local manufacturers.
The Minister said this year will be a year of opportunity for small businesses, adding that the government will initiate efforts to offer legal protection for local products and inventions.
"This year, hopefully, the President, this government will give a lot of priority to such entities [small businesses]. We are developing a legal framework to ensure trademarks, brand protection to give them the required protection through the law. In addition, we will also facilitate opportunities that had been lacking for online businesses," Minister Saeed explained.
Organised by the Business Centre Corporation (BCC) under the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, this nationwide expo will promote artists, businesses and innovators in the Maldives and provide a common platform for collaborations and partnerships to enhance their skills, ideas and inventions.
