Opposition party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said that the party overcame the coup that overthrew former President Mohammed Nasheed was overcome by showing the power of the people, and assured the public that the party would remain doing so.
Yesterday marked 13 years since Nasheed's administration fell amid after members of police and MNDF went against him. On the occasion, Fayyaz said that "overthrowing the first MDP government by a coup 13 years ago was the biggest attack on Maldivian democracy in recent history."
It was a day that destroyed the trust of the people in the government system and state institutions, and one that caused serious damage to the journey of democracy, he said.
People overcame the coup in a terrible environment because of the hard work of many people and the MDP will continue to ensure the power of the people, he also added.
Fayyaz’s post was reposted by Nasheed last night.
Although on paper, Nasheed prematurely resigned from his term, MDP held massive protests in Malé and across the country against it.
Upon Nasheed's resignation, his Vice President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik took oath as president. MDP said this was a coup and protested against him as well. Following investigations, the Commission of National Inquiry (CONI) ruled that it was not a coup.
Will continue to empower the public: Fayyaz
