Government to Offer Free Land in Exchange for Properties in Male’s Congested Areas

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government will launch a project this year to provide free land plots to individuals who surrender properties located in congested areas of Malé, such as narrow alleyways and corner lots.
This initiative fulfills a key pledge from President Muizzu’s presidential campaign, which promised support for residents who wish to exchange their land in Malé for new plots in more viable locations, along with access to housing loans.
In an interview with state media, President Muizzu said that many residential plots in Malé are situated in tight alleyways, which pose significant challenges for redevelopment and hinder eligibility for housing finance. To address this, the government will soon open opportunities for voluntary land exchange.
“We will open opportunities for those who wish to relocate, if all residents of houses in narrow streets and alleyways agree to surrender their properties,” the President stated. “This includes the entire Malé region, including Hulhumalé and all newly reclaimed areas.”
Citizens who surrender such land will be eligible to receive plots of equivalent size in newly developed areas of the Malé region, including Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru Falhu, North Thilafushi, Rasmale’, and Hulhumalé.
In addition to addressing the city’s housing congestion, the President noted that the reclaimed plots in Malé will be repurposed to expand green spaces, such as parks and public squares. Plot allocation and official documentation for exchanged land will begin within this year.
The project aims to reduce urban crowding, facilitate easier access to housing finance, and improve overall livability within the capital city.
