Govt. will have to pay damages for Imran’s sentence: Ali Zahir

Adhaalath Party’s Deputy Leader Ali Zahir has said that the Government will have to pay damages for the sentence delivered to the Party Leader Imran Abdullah.
He made the statement speaking in the joint rally held with AP and MDP to protest the 12 year sentence issued on Imran over the terror charges filed in connection to the May Day protests of 2015.
In his address, Ali Zahir warned that this sentence will propel Maldives to the international media spotlight and attract the unwanted attention of international partners. He added that this sentence had shown that Maldives had regressed in democratic principles, which will not be accepted either locally or internationally. Ali Zahir said that this attention will be transformed to pressure and that the Government will not be able to withstand that pressure.
He continuously stressed that getting jailed over free speech was a clear indication that Maldives had regressed.
Ali Zahir added that AP spirit had not wavered in face of the 12 year jail sentence, adding that the Party will persevere.
