Health-sector workers face complete OT bonus cut-off if exceeds 50% of salary

The workers of the Maldivian health sector is facing a complete cut-off of the over-time bonus they receive، if the bonus exceeds 50% of their basic salary.
In a circular signed and issued by State Minister for Health Mohamed Ibrahim Manik، it was stated that the Health Ministry has decided to check very thoroughly، if the over-time bonus that is listed on the salary sheets for all the workers is actually given for the work they do.
The circular states that over-time bonus is given for the compulsory work that is done after or before official work hours، that the employees fail to do during official hours.
The Ministry says in their circular، that when they went through January 2015’s salary sheets، they observed that some employees had a greater over-time bonus than their basic salary. So، since over-time work is to be done with authorization by seniors، the ministry stated that they have decided to thoroughly go through the over-time bonus issue.
Hence، the Health ministry has said that January 2015’s salary sheets have been scanned، and the ministry has decided to cut off the over-time bonuses of those employees who have received it in more than 50% of their basic salaried. The ministry says that they wish to find the details of the over-time work done by these said employees، so the over-time bonus will be issued only after the institution provides the ministry with a detailed report on the works the employee has done، with reasons for over-time work، signed by a supervisor and a senior manager at the institution.
The ministry didn’t state whether or not this procedure will be followed for the following months، but the ministry’s circular says that if any “suspicious” amounts regarding over-time bonuses on salary sheets come to the Ministry’s attention، the employee’s over-time bonus will be cut off completely for that month.
