Newly elected speaker Qasim pays courtesy visit to ex-president Nasheed

Jumhoree Party (JP) leader and newly elected speaker Qasim Ibrahim has paid a courtesy visit to former President Mohamed Nasheed.
The two opposition leaders met at Nasheed’s house on Monday morning.
Hassan Latheef, the chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), also joined the meeting.
While the media was informed of the meeting, details of their discussion were not disclosed.
Qasim, as the new speaker, also met with president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday.
Nasheed, Qasim, Solih, as well as Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla have been meeting each other recently.
They are part of the opposition coalition, which includes former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom who is on a medical trip abroad.
Solih’s victory in the recent presidential election has led to huge gains for the opposition. Nasheed and Qasim were allowed to return from self-exile abroad after Qasim’s prison conviction was overturned and Nasheed’s sentence suspended. Imran was also released after the suspension of his sentence.
