Maldivians to be able to open seller accounts on Alibaba.com

Maldivian entrepreneurs will soon be able to open seller accounts on the Alibaba e-commerce platform, Alibaba.com, says Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Saeed announced that the Economic Ministry is collaborating with Alibaba to hold a one-day online workshop next week.
According to Saeed, the workshop, scheduled for September 16, is aimed at supporting online and e-commerce businesses in the Maldives.
He added that the initiative is designed to help Maldivian entrepreneurs create seller accounts on Alibaba.com.
“The initiative is designed to help Maldivian entrepreneurs create seller accounts on http://Alibaba.com enabling them to register, promote, and sell their products without barriers,” he wrote.
The original business of Alibaba, Alibaba.com serves as a global wholesale marketplace. It primarily focuses on facilitating trade between businesses worldwide and manufacturers. The platform lists millions of products across various categories, from raw materials to finished goods.
Saeed said the initiative is part of ongoing talks with Alibaba, supported by the Chinese government, as both Maldives and China work to strengthen bilateral ties under the free trade agreement between the two countries.
He added that the initiative is also part of efforts to fulfil a pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to enable Maldivians to open seller accounts in leading global e-commerce platforms.
