Milandhoo Airport, Key Projects Launched with 30-Month Deadline

MILANDHOO, North Miladhunmadulu Atoll – President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a 30-month deadline to complete the Milandhoo Airport project, headlining a wave of major development initiatives launched on the island Wednesday.
Addressing a packed community meeting as part of his atoll tour, the President laid out an ambitious timeline for one of his key presidential pledges. He confirmed that a contract for a 40-hectare land reclamation was signed today, with that phase slated for completion within eight months.
The full airport development, which includes harbour upgrades and facility relocation, is scheduled to be fully operational within 30 months. The government states the project is designed to boost economic activity and regional connectivity.
“The 40-hectare reclamation will be finished in eight months, and the entire airport, with the new harbour, will be operational in 30 months. This is a firm commitment to the people of Milandhoo,” President Muizzu said, directly addressing the timeline.
The visit served as a major launchpad for other high-profile projects. The President initiated the construction of 50 housing units, the Milandhoo Sports Complex, and the second phase of road development. He also attended groundbreaking ceremonies for a new 30-bed hospital and a modern Islamic Centre capable of accommodating 700 worshippers.
Further elevating the day’s announcements, the President revealed that a second Public Works Unit for the atoll will be established in Milandhoo to streamline infrastructure management. He also confirmed that WAMCO waste management services will begin in January 2026, with X-ray services for the hospital starting by year’s end.
The rapid-fire launch of projects, which also included inaugurating new sports facilities and launching passport services, was met with optimism by residents who have long awaited such comprehensive development.
“Today is not just about promises; it is about visible, tangible progress that will reshape our community and secure our future,” the President stated, emphasizing the government’s focus on sustainable development.
The concentration of projects and the specific deadlines provided mark a significant step in the administration’s efforts to accelerate development in the atolls.
