Police have said that all 79 people arrested during their operation in Anbaraa, a picnic island in Vaavu Atoll, have tested positive for drugs.
Police said this during a press conference at Iskandar Building today to provide information on their operation in Anbaraa.
“79 people were arrested, made up of 59 men, 19 women, and one girl below the age of 18. A foreigner is also included among the suspects. All 79 people have tested positive for drugs,” said Chief Inspector of Police Abdulla Shatheeh.
He said that only people who had drugs on their person were arrested at the scene.
“A total of 198 people were searched, but all 119 people who did not have drugs with them or in the things they were carrying were released,” he said.
Shatheeh said that large amounts of drugs and money were confiscated in the operation. The drugs include LSD stickers, 11 packets containing substances suspected to be drugs, several packets and film canisters containing cannabis, and joints mixed with tobacco.
Police also seized over MVR 90,000 from the scene.
A large number of police officers participated in this operation which was carried out following information gathered by Police Intelligence, said Shatheeh.
