All party talks depend on the opening of Parliament: Mujthaba

In an exclusive interview with Haveeru, Mujthaba said that four parties had refused to join the all party talks after he had returned from a pre-scheduled informal trip abroad. The discussions were at a standstill since he flew out on the 4th of this month. “I came back on the 13thand tried to commence the talks, but by then four major parties had backed out of the talks demanding no sit-down unless the parliament reconvenes. They were Adhaalath Party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), People’s Alliance (PA) and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP). Adhaalath also demands that there be a calm environment before they rejoin the talks, we are hoping the parliament would be able to reconvene on Monday” Mujthaba said. He added that while three parties who have seats in the parliament are refusing dialogue until the parliament reconvenes, he believes that their involvement in the all party talks is crucial. “We are referring to that deliberations as all party talks, hence it will be difficult to carry on in the absence of three major parties” he said. Five sessions were carried out before the talks came to a halt, in which there have been some major differences in views on how to prioritize the agenda. Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) wanted the finalization of an early election date to top the agenda while pro government parties had been against it.
