We accept IMF recommendations: Finance Minister
In reference to the recommendations made by the IMF team during the recent to the Maldives, Minister stressed that some of them cannot be implemented immediately. “We can’t stop the subsidies immediately. It can be stopped only with the advice of Parliament.” Jihad detailed. Jihad agreed with the changes proposed by IMF to the policy under which staple food subsidy is distributed. “IMF said tourists and foreign expatriate workers in resorts benefit from the staple food subsidy. Maldivians also work in those resorts. So we have to find the most suitable way to provide the staple food subsidy. Now we are looking into that,” Jihad said. Minister also revealed that the government has decided to brig changes to the other subsidies before the state budget is submitted to parliament. He accepted that the recommendation of IMF must be enforced. However, he added that it can be done so with the advice of the Parliament.
