Court orders release of ex-BML employee arrested in alleged confidentiality breach

High Court has ordered the release of former Manager of Bank of Maldives, F. Nilandhoo Branch, Qasim Abdul Kareem - arrested for releasing confidential information after he allegedly leaked information of the USD 500,000 transaction from Mohamed Allam Latheef (Moho)'s SOF Private Limited's bank account to President Abdulla Yameen's account.
High Court said on Thursday that Criminal Court had extended Qasim’s remand period 12 times so far.
Qasim’s remand was extended for the last time on May 19, citing the challenges that may be faced by police to investigate the case is he were released.
High Court ruled that police had failed to give a sufficient reason why Qasim may attempt to destroy evidence.
All judges presiding over the case agreed that there was no reason why Qasim should be kept under arrest.
