Monday's parliament sitting kicks off as Speaker Qasim's first sitting

The first Parliament sitting after Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim was elected as new Speaker, has begun on Monday morning.
Qasim was elected as the new Parliament Speaker on the 01st of November with the vote of 62 sitting lawmakers. MP for Fonadhoo constituency, who ran alongside him for the post of Speaker, fell behind with 16 votes.
This came after former Speaker Abdulla Maseeh’s resignation from his post following a fourth no-confidence motion filed against him by opposition aligned lawmakers.
Qasim, who has been in Parliament for 18 years, stated that he will be following legally mandated ways during his term as Speaker and that he will do his best to avoid the unfortunate occurrences that have been observed in Parliament the past few days.
While a total of three motions are to be considered at Monday's sitting, one of the motions submitted to the Parliament floor that are being debated on is the one to repeal the anti-defamation law, submitted in October by North-Henveiru constituency MP Abdulla Shahid.
The motion submitted by Vaikaradhoo MP Mohamed Nazim, to dismiss Guraidhoo constituency MP Ibrahim Riza from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), was placed on Monday's agenda as well.
