50 years of Independence - the Declaration that made Maldivian History

July 26th, 2015 marks the Golden Jubilee of Maldivian Independence.
While a flurry of activities were colorfully laid out to mark 50 years of Maldivian Independence, it remains a strong fact that we Maldivians are to shoulder the responsibilities of maintaining this priceless Independence.
We Maldivians celebrate a milestone engraving - in which we have reached half a century of true Independence from the British protectorate in 1965. It sets history in motion through a signed agreement, by national heroes who will be cherished throughout time.
From December 16th, 1887 to July 26th, 1965, the Maldives and its citizens had to live under the British thumb, due to the instigation of political competition between the ruling ranks - most notably the peak of the scenario observed in 1886.
And although the British had agreed not to interfere with the country’s domestic affairs, as per their agreement with the Maldives on 1887, they had - nonetheless - been a massive influence on the country’s rule.
Even the infamous “Huvadhoo Coup” - which saw the announcement of independence from citizens across four southern atolls - had a British hand in it.
However, Maldives broke out of the shackles when the Declaration of Independence was finally signed in Colombo, Sri Lanka, during the year 1965 - on the morning which also marked the dawn of a new era.
The agreement was signed by Former Maldivian Prime Minister - Honorable Ibrahim Nasir Rannabandeyri Kilegefaanu, on behalf of Maldives, and by British High Commissioner in Ceylon - Michael Worker, on behalf of the British.
From that day onward, the tiny island nation of Maldives remains free, prioritizing the country’s Islamic and national values above all else.
The Maldivians are proud to establish their own culture, tradition and language; and remains vigilant on their obligations to maintain everlasting peace, prosperity and unity.
And we are reminded that are forever grateful for the brave and noble deeds accomplished by our forefathers, who had shielded the country from the rough and treacherous waves, for the sake of future generations.
