Telecommunications giant Dhiraagu has been named as the official telecommunications partner of the Maldivian contingents who will be participating in the Indian Ocean Island Games, which is scheduled to commence on Saturday at Réunion.
The sponsorship agreement was signed on behalf of Dhiraagu by the company’s Director of Marketing Ahmed Maumoon, and on behalf of the Olympic Unity by its Secretary General Ahmed Maruzooq (Marey).
Dhiraagu has also decided to award the athletes who earn a golden medal in the tournament. For that, each such athlete will be provided with any preferential high-speed broadband service for one year, completely free of charge.
The Maldivian contingents for this year’s Indian Ocean Island Games are comprised of 271 members, while a total of 14 teams are participating for 10 various sports in the tournament.
The Games, which debuted in 1979, aims at the small island nations in the Indian Ocean. It was noted that Maldives had earned a medal at one sport during the tournament.
The seven contenders for this year’s tournament are: Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Maldives, Réunion and Seychelles.
The most recently-held Games took place at Seychelles in 2011.
