The biggest opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has agreed to work together with Jumhoory Party (JP) to protect the Constitution, and to stop all unconstitutional acts being carried out by the government.
Both parties revealed that they had reached a mutual understanding, while speaking to the press after talks held at M. Kunooz, earlier tonight.
Speaking to journalists Deputy Leader of JP, Ameen Ibrahim revealed that both the parties had agreed to work together to protect the Constitution in and even outside the Parliament. He added that further details of these works will be shared once a plan of action is finalized.
“This government that we worked so hard to establish is now committing unconstitutional acts,” Ameen said.
MDP Chairperson, Ali Waheed ensured that the works MDP and JP are to do together will be successful, bringing out good results for the people.
JP representatives participating in tonight’s talks include JP Deputy Leader and former Transport Minister Ameen Ibrahim, Deputy Leader and Thaa Atoll member of the Special Majlis Dr. Hussain Rasheed, Deputy Leader of JP’s Parliamentary Group and former Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz, MP for Mathiveri constituency Hussain Mohamed, and MP for Kendhoo constituency and renowned lawyer Ali Hussain.
MDP representatives in the talks include the party’s Chairperson Ali Waheed, and two former Speakers of the Parliament; MP for Henveiru North constituency Abdulla Shahid, and Male’ City Mayor Mohamed Shihab. Although MDP had previously stated that Mahchangolhi North MP Mariya Ahmed Didi, and MDP Parliamentary Group leader and MP for Hinnavaru constituency Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) would also participate, they were not present at the talks.
The discussions between the two parties were not fully disclosed to the media.
In addition to inviting MDP, JP Leader Qasim Ibrahim had invited Adhaalath Party (AP) and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) as well. However, so far discussions have only been conducted with MDP.
