Mohamed “Bob” Thasmeen has been named the second ‘Maldivian Idol’ in the season finale of the hit television show that was held on Saturday night.
Thasmeen – popularly known as “Bob”, is a native of Maafushi Island in Kaafu Atoll and has remained as a popular contestant among the judges and viewers throughout Season 2 of the show.
After it was revealed that “Bob” would be the new ‘Maldivian Idol’, health minister Abdullah Nazim, who was the special guest on Saturday night’s show had awarded him the MVR 250,000 cash prize. He also received numerous other prizes presented by the show’s sponsors.
The new Idol took to Twitter immediately to thank his fans, stating that his success was the result of his loyal fans’ hard work.
While “Bob” won the second season of the biggest singing competition series aired in the Maldives, Hamoodh Ahmed was named the runner-up, and Shamveel Mohamed as the second runner-up of this season.
The three finalists received prizes worth approximately MVR5.8 million from the show’s sponsors.
Saturday night’s finale show of ‘Maldivian Idol’ saw performances by popular local artists such as Andhala Haleem and “Soppe’”, a heart-warming tribute to Maldivian music legend, late Ahmed Nashid of Zero Degree Atoll by his daughter Nish Nashid, and also a nostalgic performance by 90s superstar Sameeu.
The judges, Mariyam Unoosha, Ibrahim “Ibbe” Zaid Ali and Ahmed Affan also performed in Saturday night’s finale, along with last year’s Maldivian Idol winner Laisha Junaid and runner-up Shalabi Ibrahim.
Maldivian Idol is the first franchised television show in the Maldives, and the biggest talent show aired on television in Maldivian history, with over 600 contestants competing every season. The local telecom giant ‘Dhiraagu’ is the show’s title sponsor, and the core associates of the show are; Lotus, Dabur, Allied Insurance, XL Energy drink and Maldivian. The MVR250,000 grand prize is allocated by Public Service Media (PSM).
