European Parliament tables resolution to freeze assets of Maldivian state officials

The European Parliament has tabled a resolution, which calls the European Union (EU) and its member states to impose a travel embargo on and to freeze international assets of top state officials of the Maldivian government.
The resolution has also made three main demands on the Maldivian government; to "immediately and unconditionally release former President Mohamed Nasheed and former Defense Ministers Tholhath Ibrahim and Mohamed Nazim", and clear them of terror charges for which they have been convicted.
The resolution also called on the government to take the "necessary steps to restore confidence in its commitment to democracy, judicial independence, and rule of law, including respect for the freedoms of expression and of assembly and respect for due process".
“Safeguard the unobstructed functioning of a pluralistic democracy, at which not only those who call for conservative Islam to dominate politics and society, but also pro-democracy, moderate Muslims and supporters of secularism, who oppose Wahhabi Salafist influence in the Maldives, can rightly participate” the resolution read.
The proposed resolution further called on the government to re-form the judiciary and to re-establish the moratorium on the death penalty and to allow for a proper investigation into the disappearance of Ahmed Rilwan, and the attacks and threats against journalists and independent institutions.
