Maldivian democracy needs to be strengthened: Karimulla

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Secretary General Karimulla Akbar Khan says that the only way to strengthen the democracy in Maldives is for Parliamentarians to become responsible and well-disciplined people.
Speaking with the press before his departure following a two day visit to Maldives, he said that Maldivian democracy is in need of strengthening, adding that this would only be possible when MPs become more responsible.
He pointed out that democracy in Maldives is in its fledgling stages, adding that even the MPs are in need of training.
Khan revealed that the main purpose of his visit was to monitor the situation of the parliament, strengthen the parliament as well as hold discussions with the government regarding steps to improve discipline among the parliamentarians.
Akbar also revealed that training programs would be held for parliamentarians to improve their discipline, a result of discussions with Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Maseeh.
He went on to point out that the CPA is not a political organization, noting that their sole aim is to improve parliaments on a global scale. He said that the purpose of the opposition in the parliament is to make the government responsible, weed out corruption and closely monitor the government.
