Newly-appointed Commonwealth Special Envoy to the Maldives Willy Munyoki Mutunga has begun his 5-day visit to the Maldives by engaging in discussions with the country’s politicians.
The former Kenyan Chief Justice arrived in the Maldives Sunday night, and is scheduled to meet with some of the country’s key political figures, including President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, political party leaders, as well as the civil society.
Vnews was unable to obtain details of the meetings that have already taken place. The Commonwealth had not divulged any further information about his visit either. However, he had previously stated that the main purpose of his visit is to help establish a conducive atmosphere for discussions between political parties, so that all issues and concerns could be resolved through dialogue.
The Commonwealth Secretary General appointed the Special Envoy at the request of the Maldivian government in February this year, to support the Government in implementing the reforms initiated by President Yameen.
