A Group of Maldivian ‘jihadists’ have gone to Syria in order to help the rebel forces in their war against the countries president.
Maldivian media on Tuesday reported that six Maldivians have gone to Syria, in order to join the local rebels there in their fight against the government. One out of the six men took his wife and one year old child with him, while another took his wife along.
They passed into Syria through the Turkish border.
Reports say that an estimated 100 Maldivians are already fighting in the Syrian civil war. The majority of them have joined a militant group called Al-Nusra Front.
The number of young Maldivians leaving the country for jihad has been on the rise as of late.
The Maldivian Islamic Ministry has condemned the action, and has pointed out that a civil war in a Muslim country cannot be defined as ‘jihad’. He reminded that such actions are wrong both morally and in the Islamic view.
