Maldivian opposition politicians meet with Commonwealth SG

Maldivian opposition politicians currently residing in the United Kingdom have met with the new Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed, former Vice-president Mohamed Jameel, former Transport Minister Ameen Ibrahim and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Ali Waheed took part in the meeting that took place in the UK-based Commonwealth Office.
Ameen made tweet following the meeting, stating that they discussed bringing back democracy to Maldives.
The meeting comes at a time when the deadline given by Commonwealth to remedy the political instability is closing in.
If progress is not seen within the deadline, they will make a decision regarding whether to take action against Maldives, within the month.
Maldives was placed on the Commonwealth agenda during former president Mohamed Waheed’s tenure.
It is noteworthy that discussions regarding taking action against Maldives was held at Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) meetings, during the current regime.
President Abdulla Yameen has requested ally nations such as India and Malaysia to help Maldives in the case of action by the Commonwealth.
