Maldivian criminals in Lanka will not receive assistance: HC

High Commissioner to the Maldives in Sri Lanka, Commissioner Zahiya Zareer has called out upon all Maldivians visiting or residing in Sri Lanka to act accordingly to the laws of the country.
Speaking to Vnews, Ms. Zahiya stated that although it is a small number, there are a few Maldivians who travel to Sri Lanka for different purposes or people who are living in the country who have been unconstitutional.
Ms. Zahiya stated that all people travelling to Sri Lanka, despite their nationality or background are required to abide by the laws and regulations of the country. She noted that in a circumstance where a Maldivian commits a crime in Sri Lanka, there will be nothing that the high commission could do to help.
Ms. Zahiya stated that Maldivian citizens should respect the Sri Lankan constitution just as they would act accordingly to the constitution of their own country. Ms. Zahiya stated that even a few people being unlawful should be something of concern. She noted that if there is an increase in the number of people violating the law, it is probable that Maldivians might not be able to enjoy the same privileges in the future.
“In reality, although it is a few cases, Maldivians seem to committing crimes in Sri Lanka and it should be something of deep concern to us,” Ms. Zahiya stated.
Ms. Zayiha stated that the reason Maldivians have visa exemptions in Sri Lanka and receive many other benefits is because of the special bond that the Sri Lankan government and Maldivian government already possess.
Ms. Zahiya added that to maintain that close relationship and conserve those same prerogatives, Maldivians should be considerate to the law. She added that going against the law and upholding a bad reputation will destroy the privileges for the majority.
According to Statistics revealed by the High Commission, it stated that more than ten thousands Maldivians are currently residing in Sri Lanka. It also noted that every month, more than five thousand Maldivians traveled to Sri Lanka for different purposes.
It is understood that Maldivians mostly travel to Sri Lanka for studies, medical purposes, holidays and business.
