Azima responds to opposition stance on Maldivian democracy

Legal Affairs Minister of the President's Office - Azima Shukoor - says that talks about "democracy being dead in the country" are triggered merely because of the fact that the former President Mohamed Nasheed is not a free man.
She said this in a special interview with BBC News Day.
Earlier, Amal Clooney , from Nasheeds legal team spoke to BBC about the Maldivian democracy, and that how its principles had died over the years.
Azima said that Maldivian government follows all the democratic principles, and that it would be made clear with every decision by the government.
She also said that the accusations over a dead democracy is merely spoken in Nasheed's favor.
She further stated that these accusations are made while Nasheed is a prisoner who has been imprisoned for 13 years in jail.
“His crimes also account to the verdict that he is not eligible to run for presidency, and this leads to more such accusations by his supporters,” said Azima.
She said that proceedings will be followed according to the court rulings, and that no decisions will be made outside of their mandates.
