The Water and Sewerage Act has been ratified.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ratified the act on Wednesday, which was passed by the People’s Majlis on July 20.
Regulations related to the act are to be established within six months and the act has been publicized in the government gazette.
The motion was proposed to Majlis by Gemenafushi constituency MP Ahmed Saeed in order to ensure water supply and sewerage services for the entire nation and stipulates the responsibilities of institutions tasked with the work as well as protocols linked to the services.
The act also highlights measures to be taken if the protocols provided are violated, under the act.
Further, it adds that environment-friendly methods must be prioritized in providing these services across the country and that the services must be used in ways that induce the least damage to environment as well.
The act prohibits additional costs to provide water supply and sewerage services, asides from the cost stated under the act.
