Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured that the Maldivian government will always acknowledge the cooperation given by the United States to uphold democracy in the Maldives.
The assurance was made via a tweet by the Ministry’s official Twitter account, in which the Ministry added that the Maldivian government is forever grateful for their help.
Meanwhile, the US State Department’s Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Affairs Nisha Bishwal had called Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon yesterday to express the best wishes of the holy month of Ramadan to the Maldives and its citizens.
In her conversation with the Foreign Minister, Ms. Bishwal had pointed out that Maldives is currently facing hurdles in their efforts to uphold and maintain democracy. She also expressed worries about the “fading independence of the Maldivian democracy and institutions, as well as the deterioration of basic rights”.
These worries are being echoed by notable countries across the international community; and for that, she had urged that the Maldives takes special measures to solve it.
However, she said that the US government will always work together to overcome those hurdles.
The US, as well as several countries, had earlier expressed worries regarding the political situation in the country; but the Maldivian government had insisted that it wouldn’t do anything to sully the country’s democracy, adding that they are actually doing all they can to further strengthen the democratic values in the country.
