The Maldives’ first shark research centre, the Shark Research and Conservation Hub, has opened in Fuvahmulah City.
The hub was officially inaugurated by Fuvahmulah City Mayor Ismail Rafeeq.
The research centre was established by the Shark Programme, a private organisation founded in January 2023. According to the Fuvahmulah City Council, the centre will conduct shark research, teach classes on marine life, and work with scientists, conservationists and local communities to improve shark conservation.
The Shark Programme is involved in international advocacy to protect shark species in Maldivian waters, with support from local and international experts. The organisation believes the hub will expand and strengthen its conservation work.
Local authorities and diving centres in Fuvahmulah City are promoting the city as a leading shark-diving destination. As a result, the city won the “Best Shark Diving Destination” award at Asia’s largest diving expo in December 2024.
Fuvahmulah City attracts many tourists due to its rare shark and fish species, with visitors coming regularly to dive and observe sharks.
