Aim is to change govt, established parliamentary system: President Nasheed

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Haveeru, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader said coalitions had been proven to be a failure in a presidential system the past two elections. “Government is founded from a coalition. The coalition falls after the government comes into power. This constitution leaves no room for a coalition to rule. Therefore the coalition cannot be maintained,” said President Nasheed. He said that no party had any hope of winning the presidential election unless they made a coalition, and that experience dictated that such coalitions had a short life. Another reason why a parliamentary system should be established is because of the increase in President Yameen’s “autocratic actions,” and the increase in number of threats to the opposition, said the opposition leader. According to President Nasheed, President Yameen had set sights to eliminating all competition in time for the next presidential elections, and that such action meant they had to “toughen up” their stance. “We will have to go towards impeachment if President Yameen continues down that road,” he said. He said that it would “come to an election after resignations and no confidence votes,” and that people needed to rally for President Yameen’s resignation. “…We don’t want a coup in Maldives. But we don’t want for the country to be in an endless stream of misery either,” said President Nasheed, who handed in his resignation on February 7, 2012 after police and army officers joined forces with opposition against him. He said that he backed Jumhoory Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim to run the country, if the government were to change under any circumstances before Presidential Elections 2018. Though MDP and JP have joined together to “protect Maldivian Constitution,” President Nasheed said that there hadn’t been much discussion in JP/MDP joint commission meeting to change President Yameen’s government and establish parliamentary rule. But the discussions would be carried out and both parties will join forces to gain Majlis majority to ensure the success of the discussions, he said. “Maybe we may not be able to gain majority by March 2,” said President Nasheed, saying that they would eventually secure Majlis majority even if they were not able to do so in time for Majlis opening on March 2, 2015.
