Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has revealed no complaints were received on the party membership applications that were published for verification.
On May 22, ECM began publishing the list of individuals registering at political parties as part of efforts to strengthen the verification process of party membership forms submitted to the commission. The first list published by ECM included the names of 373 individuals registering at three parties, including 23 applications for Jumhooree Party (JP), 105 applications for Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and 245 applications for Maldives National Party (MNP). ECM said no complaints were submitted regarding the forms by the deadline, which was up by 1500hrs on May 29.
ECM has been stepping up efforts to confirm the validity of party membership forms, due to the increasing number of complaints of individuals being registered as members of political parties without their knowledge.
