The European Union delegation currently visiting the Maldives met with ruling party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on Monday.
A tweet from EU said that senior officials from the union met representatives from PPM and discussions took place about the current political status of the Maldives.
PPM was represented by the party’s secretary general and Nilandhoo MP Dr Abdulla Khaleel, PPM’s deputy leader and tourism minister Moosa Zameer, PG leader and Vilimale MP Ahmed Nihan, and Naifairu MP Ahmed Shiyam.
No details of this meeting with the ruling party have been disclosed so far.
EU had previously met with opposition members including former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and members from the leading opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), as well as Jumhoory Party (JP).
Additionally, the EU delegation met with state leading members such as home minister Azleen Ahmed, foreign minister Dr Mohamed Asim, Attorney General Mohamed Anil and defence minister Adam Shareef.
It is believed that the EU intends to find out the political issues within the Maldives, particularly ones that would relate to the upcoming presidential elections.
A parliamentary group from EU had visited the country during October last year, during which a resolution was passed to take action on the Maldives.
The resolution had been passed with the majority of EU voting in favour, after stating that events in the Maldives were not proceeding in a democratic manner. The Maldivian government had shrugged off this resolution saying that the state does not believe that the EU would follow through with it.
