There would be a Waste Management Centre established in each island by 2018” says Minister Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim. Minister made this statement while speaking at the signing ceremony of the “Saafu Raajje Statement” held on occasion of National 3R Day. Today was marked as National 3R Day and the Sixth regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific will be held from 16-19 August 2015. It is an initiative taken by the Ministry of environment and energy and Ministry of Tourism.
Speaking at the signing ceremony held at Dharubaaruge this afternoon, Minister Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim said that as Maldives is highly dependent on the Tourism Industry, the Tourism industry is highly dependent on the Environment sector. He also said that as Agriculture and fishing is dependent on the environment, protecting the environment is highly crucial. He also said that this could be achieved with the cooperation from the atoll councils and this cooperative agreement would further help to achieve the goals. Speaking further, he also said that Waste Management Policy of the government aims to manage the waste and bring economic development to our nation. This agreement was signed by all the atoll councils of the Maldives.
