PG requested to investigate case of 14 people arrested 13 years ago

The Prosecutor General (PG) has been requested by 14 people who claim that they were wrongfully arrested 13 years ago, to investigate their case.
They were arrested under accusations of assault in F. Magoodhoo in 1999, during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s government.
An official of PG Office said today that the 14 Magoodhoo citizens submitted their case to the PG on 7 August, and that they will be provided an answer after the PG Office investigates their claims.
Sun Online has received copies of the letters sent to PG, which state that the Constitution in effect at the time stipulates that a person can be held in custody for more than seven days only if permission is obtained in writing from a Committee of three people appointed by the President. This permission allows the period of detention to be extended to 15 days.
In spite of this law, the 14 people claim that they were detained in Dhoonidhoo for 110 days in 1999.
They thus requested the PG to order the Police to investigate this case, and based on that investigation, to press charges against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
