Maldives under a military rule: Nasheed

Speaking at the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rally last night, Nasheed had reaffirmed his earlier statement that around 300 Police officers had partaken in the "coup" that overthrew his government on February 7. He added that the reins of the “foremost power of the State” lie with 300 officer of the Police Specialist Operations (SO) unit. The former President went on to say that all powers of the State were now at the hands of present Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim and Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz. "The people of Maldives would be well aware of the state of the rule in the country, though my Vice President had been announced as the legal President to cover up the basic truth. This is a military rule," Nasheed stressed. In relation to the recently released report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) set up by the then VP and current President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to probe the circumstances surrounding the transfer of power on February 7, Nasheed expressed satisfaction with the call in the report to investigate the acts of brutality by the military and the Police on February 6, 7 and 8 and to take action against the perpetrators. "We all know that there are a lot of people who wish to work in true national spirit to save the nation and introduce democratic principles in this country. Their hope is for the removal of the traitors. That is to find out the people responsible for the infringement of the laws and have them investigated, charged, prosecuted, convicted and sentenced accordingly," Nasheed said speaking at the rally participated by large numbers of MDP supporters and prominent members of the party. He also reiterated his vow to restore the just rule of MDP in the country very soon. He further referred to the rumors he had heard from some family friends in relation to the amounts spent to "buy the coup" and added that the instigators of the "coup" would be well aware of just how much they had spent. "I have heard from some family friends through hearsay about those expenses. I have heard from others that some individuals had spent USD2.3 million for this," Nasheed alleged. Nasheed further stressed that he would continue to label current Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz and Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim as "traitor" as they have been accused to having brought about this "coup." "Traitor Riyaz, traitor Nazim we are still accusing you of bringing about this coup until your role is investigated and just punishment is delivered. Until such time, we are all sad that such words are being directed to your uniforms that you have soiled," he said. Nasheed yesterday had accepted the report of the CNI despite concerns over the report. The Commonwealth backed CNI’s report which was publicized on Thursday had ruled that Nasheed had resigned on his own free will and the transfer of power had been constitutional. Speaking to the media for the first time since the release of the CNI’s report, Nasheed further alleged that the report had been compiled with the political situation in mind rather than the truth. He further added that he respected the concerns raised by his representative to the CNI Ahmed ‘Gahaa’ Saeed who had resigned on the eve of the report’s release. Nasheed stressed that his decision to accept CNI’s report is with the concerns raised by Saeed. Following the rally last night, Nasheed took to the streets with large numbers of his supporters calling for early presidential elections.
