The governments of the Maldives and China have reached a formal agreement to develop 500 social housing units in Male’ City, in another major move towards addressing the housing needs in the capital.
The pivotal “Minutes of the Meeting” document was signed on the sidelines of the “High Level Conference on Global Action for Shared Development,” which took place in Beijing from 21 to 22 April.
The agreement, a direct outcome of extensive discussions held during the conference, marks a major step forward in bilateral cooperation. The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development confirmed that the project will be realised through interest-free financial assistance provided by the Chinese government, underscoring a commitment to shared development and mutual cooperation.
Minister of State for Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Ibrahim Thoaam Mohamed, signed the minutes on behalf of the Maldivian government, while Liu Junfeng, Chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), signed for the Chinese side.
In a related meeting, both parties also reviewed other ongoing development projects in the Maldives funded with Chinese assistance. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to working closely together to ensure the safe, timely, and successful implementation of all collaborative initiatives.
