A man has been arrested and remanded in custody for 10 days after allegedly assaulting a woman in Halaveli Goalhi, Galolhu, Male'.
Police said the incident was reported around 21:00 hrs on Tuesday as a case involving disorderly conduct and a physical altercation.
A video circulating on social media shows two men and a woman involved in an argument inside an alley. One of the men appears to step between the pair in an attempt to separate them. The footage then shows the shirtless man striking the woman on the head multiple times before running out of the alley. The woman is seen shouting after him, though her voice is not audible in the video.
In a statement on Wednesday, police identified the suspect as Ali Imrah Waheed, from G. Sharaz, Male' City. He was taken into custody shortly after the incident.
Police said he was presented before the Criminal Court on Wednesday, where the court ordered him to be held in remand for 10 days while the investigation continues.
The case remains under investigation, according to police.
