The Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) have held discussions on environmental protection and the development of renewable energy in Maldives.
The meeting was held in Abu Dhabi and was attended by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim and IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera.
Discussions focused on further strengthening bilateral relations and ongoing work in the energy sector. The two sides also identified areas of potential cooperation and discussed ways to advance collaboration.
The meeting further addressed the shared priorities of Maldives and IRENA in environmental protection and the promotion of renewable energy. Views were also exchanged on the possibility of implementing joint programmes.
The government is working to strengthen the Maldives energy sector and to build an environmentally friendly society.
The government aims to generate 33 percent of Maldives’ electricity from renewable energy by 2028.
