Z Faction Says that a New Party is Possibility

The “Z Faction” of Divehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) would go for the option of registering a new political party, if members belonging to the faction “do not have any opportunities” within the party, said MR. Ahmed Mahloof, MP for Galolhu South Constituency and one of the leading supporters of al-Ustad Maumoon Abdul Qayyum, who has led the “Z Faction” within DRP. Speaking to media in a press meeting held at the office of Whale Submarine, Mahloof said that the Z Faction has been taking pains to solve the differences within DRP, and that if the efforts do not bear any fruits, Z Faction would form a separate party before 2013 presidential election. However, he confirmed that Maumoon, former President, would go as far as possible in order to find amicable solutions to the differences that have paralyzed the major opposition party in the country. “We are ready to form a new political party, if it comes to that. If the current leadership of DRP does not consider us as true members of the party, there is no point in foolishly shouting and trying to make them listen to what we have to say,” Mahloof said. Mr. Ibrahim Mohamed Shareef, another senior leader of the Z Faction and Maumoon’s spokesperson also spoke in today’s meeting, and commented on the recent appointment of DRP Deputy Leaders against the party’s constitution. Mr. Shareef insisted that in appointing Mr. Mohamed Raamiz, MP for Vilingili Constituency, and Mr. Ahmed Mohamed, DRP Council Member, as Deputy Leaders of the party, the leadership had misconstrued article 122 of the party constitution. While Article 122 of DRP constitution states the party Council may appoint a person for any elected office in cases of any vacancy during an ongoing term, article 87 makes an exception, according to the Z Faction, of the case of deputy leaders, by stating that “in case the office of the deputy leaders become vacant, new deputy leaders should be elected in a party congress”.
