All mosques in the Maldives will transition to using solar energy to power their air conditioners within three years, stated the Islamic Ministry.
Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir inaugurated the project to install solar panels in mosques on Wednesday in F. Dharanboodhoo.
Speaking at the event, Minister Zahir said the ministry’s technical team will be installing panels in all 500 mosques in the Maldives in a specific order according to their survey. He detailed that the team will prioritize the mosques that have no air conditioning and accommodate high numbers of worshippers.
Minister Zahir said this project and the government’s Quran teaching programme are ways to develop the relationship between the people and Islam.
The first solar panels were installed at the mosque in F. Dharanboodhoo.
The ministry stated that this project will also reduce the mosque’s electricity bill.
The project to use renewable energy to power air conditioners in all mosques is part of the government’s 100-day agenda.
