The International Day of Democracy was created by the UN General Assembly in 2007 and first observed on 15 September 2008. This date honors the 1997 adoption of the Universal Declaration on Democracy by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which outlines core democratic values. The day aims to emphasize the value of democracy and inspire people to engage actively in political life.
Notably, President Muizzu’s remarks comes amidst a bill in the Parliament on public referendums which has been passed on Monday.
The bill submitted by Parliament’s majority leader and Inguraidhoo constituency representative defines the circumstances under which public referendums can be held, as well as to specify the responsibilities of the relevant authorities.
Public referendums can be held to determine the following under the bill.
Issues concerning interests of the public
National issues
Amending fundamental rights and freedoms granted by the constitution
Changes to the parliamentary term
Changes to the presidential term
How the president is elected
Ratification of a bill by the president
